That was a normal bored day and I was surfing the net. No
specific work, so was moving from one page to another randomly. Starting with
desert viper, I reached the TripAdvisor page. Just out of curiosity clicked the
top 16 tourist places in Shillong. And there we go...got the name Laitlum Canyon
( the word canyon attracted me the most) , and the day after we were ready to
go.
We kicked off our bikes from Guwahati at around 5 am, though the plan was for 4
am. And I don’t want to bring any pain to my 1st travel story by speaking even a
word about our 100 kms Guwahati to Shillong journey. We reached Shillong at 9
...and moved to Smit.. Google maps didn't know what is Leitlum and after searching and searching,I got that
we need to move through the town Smit for Leitlum. No one in our group of 8, had
any idea about Smit, leave Leitlum. After taking direction from the locals
after each 5 mins, finally,we left the Shillong city. The next 15 kms to Smit
was not so amazing.even there came some
moments, when we thought are we really going to get a place as awesome as our
prev trip to Mawphlang ( that was also a sudden trip like this and what we got
was just unforgettable) . But after
leaving the NH, the scene changed.and with each turning our jaw opened wider and wider. And Smit finally.! A small clean peaceful town.
But the tragedy for us was that, No one, even at smit knew anything about
Leiltlum. The locals can hardly speak
any Hindi word, and after asking and making gestures again again, the answer was
a laugh and “NAY’. But luck was not so
bad for us I guess, we under assumption took our way,and in the next town which
was about 12kms far, we got it right. A BSF cadet confirmed that, Leitlum was 4
kms from there.
The Small Town of Smit
How much time one can take to cross 4kms on bike? 15 mins, 30 mins??? We took more than one and half hour, may be
two to get Leitlum ( excluding the time
when we were lost) . And the culprit was the breathtaking and all its synonyms
beauty of the place.! We stopped at a
place with a stone query. And all of us, I repeat all of us were just saying”
wowwww.!!, what a place.” And right now,
I am unable to find any words,to describe the place. All I can say is that, we
were blessed to see that beauty so near
to our home, when people run to Kashmir or Switzerland. Each and every single
thing of that place was just perfect, the
breathtaking landscape, the stream which was flowing between a plain hill of grass and another hill of rocks, the wind that wouldn't let us
stand, the hide seek of the sun and clouds, which with its each move, forced us
to say WOWW.! The little boy with his
herd of cows, who wouldn't let us take a single picture of him,.but couldn't help
himself from gazing at us,gave us some more awesome time.! All of us could have
stayed there forever, but Leitlum was waiting for us. With heavy minds, we
headed towards Leitlum.
The mouth watering beauty of this place took away more than 2 hours of our one day trip.! :)
And than we were lost. What happened was that, we took a wrong turn, after
asking a local with the laugh and “nay nay”. And we didn't bother to stop,as
the view was such that, everyone though that if the beauty is this like here
only, what a wonderful place will be waiting for us ahead.!! But ,after 2 or 3
kms, there was a signboard which-ed named two places that were almost impossible
to pronounce, each with more than 8 kms distance. Thanks to my cap,who blew off
with the wind, and when I was getting it back, one local farmer, directed Leitlum ,the way we came.
And after all that we finally reached our destination.!!!! LEITLUM.!!! “THE EDGE”
!! after looking at the view, one thing we really regretted that, why didn't
we just kept in mind the advice given in TripAdvisor, to reach it
before noon. The place was like out of
the world.!! A place so silent where you
can actually hear the silence.!! No
words, no pictures, no videos can actually capture or describe the beauty of the place.when we were there, it was all
covered with fog, I wonder, how one can bear
the beauty of the place without the fog.!! Despite of the big notice
prohibiting tourist to stay in the place after 5 pm, all I wanted was to spend the night
there..! I wonder what it would feel like. Leitlum has more than 2000 stone
steps connecting a village below the hills
which we could hardly recognized from the up.there is also a rope
way, which is probably used for transporting goods. We couldn't get any good
idea about it as the two locals who were there only could laugh. They didn't even have the “nay nay”. The tired we couldn't made it more than 100 steps and
when we climbed back to the top, we were wondering, how can the locals do it!!!
Whatever, the place took away all the pain out of us.Leitlum!! what a place..!!
when we were approaching our bikes, I bet everyone in our group had one thing
in mind, we must have to come again.
And the rest was simple..we started our journey back to Guwahati , had lunch at Smit, where we needed to act like a cock,to get chicken and the amazement of Meghalaya’s
rain filled our journey with some more colors, despite of the 250 kms hips
breaking bike journey.
Meghalaya, the Scotland of east is a place that can open your mouth with
wonderfully beautiful places. You just need to look beyond the common tourist
places. No doubt they are filled with the beauty that any place can ever get,
but may be by looking beyond you can
have some memories that can bring a little more jealousy to you travel story!
